What does this measure?
The average airfare paid by passengers for a one-way domestic trip.
Why is this important?
Lower airfares can help make a city a more accessible and desirable destination for businesses and tourists. Affordable airfare also makes it possible for residents to travel more for work or leisure.
How is our region performing?
In 2009, the Greater Rochester International Airport in Rochester had an average airfare of $280, 10% lower than the national average of $310. Between 2000 and 2009, Rochester experienced a 42% decline in its average airfare, and since 2002 it has remained below the national average. Although airfares across the state have dropped since 2000, Rochester has experienced the greatest reduction in ticket price. Since 2000, Rochester's average fares have consistently been more expensive than Buffalo's and cheaper than those in Syracuse.
Notes about the data
Average fares are calculated by the US Department of Transportation, based on an annual survey of domestic-only itineraries. The average fares include most taxes and fees. The annual average airfare was calculated by averaging the four quarters of each year. Figures are in 2009 dollars.
