Community Involvement : Community Participation

What does this measure?

The reported level of participation in four kinds of community groups: sports or outdoor activity club, youth organization, parent organization or school support group, or neighborhood association.

Why is this important?

These measures show how connected people are to their community through common interest groups.

How is our region performing?

In 2006, 24% of the region's adult residents reported participating in a sports or outdoor activity club, the highest of the four categories and the only one in which the regional rate exceeded the national rate. The region lagged behind the nation in participation in youth organizations, school support groups as well as neighborhood associations. Regional participation rates declined from 2000 to 2006 in youth organizations, remained similar in sports/outdoor activities, and increased in school support and neighborhood associations.

Notes about the data

Data from The Community Foundation's Social Capital Survey include residents of six counties: Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Genesee and Orleans. Data could not be broken out between Monroe and the surrounding counties.
