What does this measure?

The annual per-capita spending for cities, towns, villages, and county within a county, adjusted for inflation.

Why is this important?

Government provides critical services to communities, but the cost to taxpayers can be burdensome and can hinder efforts to attract and retain business.

How is our region performing?

Local government spending per-capita for the region was $3,645 in 2016, similar to the spending in New York State (excluding NYC). In the region, local spending has increased 2% from 2015 and 12% from 2000. Spending in each county decreased from 2015, except for Monroe, Livingston and Wyoming which increased 3%, 2% and 5%, respectively. Spending in 2016 was highest in Wyoming ($4,513) followed by Genesee ($3,878 and Monroe ($3,851). The City of Rochester spent just over $3,000 per capita, a 35% increase from 2000 and slightly less than in 2015.

Notes about the data

Data are presented in constant 2017 dollars. New York State excludes New York City. Data for this indicator are expected to be released in the fourth quarter.
