What does this measure?
The number of pedestrians killed or injured in crashes, expressed as a rate per 10,000 residents.
Why is this important?
Pedestrian-related crashes offer insight into the walkability of an area. Speed, location, vehicle size, and alcohol are major risk factors. This data can influence transportation planning, road sign usage, road safety regulations and law enforcement practices to enhance road and pedestrian safety.
How is our region performing?
In 2022, our region had 2.6 pedestrian injuries or fatalities per 10,000 residents, lower than the state (excluding NYC) rate of 3.4 and down from a recent high of 3.7 in 2016. However, the rate was much higher in the City of Rochester at 7.1. Rochester's rate had also declined substantially from 11.6 in 2016. The counties outside of Monroe had a lower incidence of pedestrian injuries or deaths at 1.5 in 2022. Despite the declines, it's important to note that in 2022, 312 people were injured or killed in crashes involving pedestrians, causing substantial harm to family members that lost loved ones and individuals that sustained life altering injuries.
Notes about the data
A pedestrian crash is a motor vehicle crash involving a person on foot or in a wheelchair. This includes people on personal conveyances such as roller skates, skateboards and scooters. Comparable U.S. data were not available.
