What does this measure?
The number of vehicle miles of bike paths or bikeable trails in a community.
Why is this important?
Investments in on-road bike lanes, bike boulevards & off-road trails provide options for residents and visitors to safely and conveniently travel by bike for transportation and leisure. This can reduce carbon emissions and allow people who cannot afford or do not desire to own cars to get where they need to go.
How is our region performing?
Our region had 281 miles of bike infrastructure in 2023, including 96 miles of bike paths and 185 miles of bikeable trails. The lion's share was in Monroe County, which had two-thirds of those miles. Most of the bike paths were in the City of Rochester, which had 77 miles or 80% of the total. Surrounding counties with many miles of bikeable trails included Orleans (26 miles), Wayne (19) and Ontario (17).
Notes about the data
Bike paths include bike lanes, bike boulevards and cycle tracks. Bikeable trails are those that are paved or consist of crushed stone or stone dust. Comparison data for previous years is not available, therefore 2023 data provides a baseline for future comparison.
